NGO solicits shift from politics to human capital development

August 1, 2022

By Teslim Oluwaseunayofunmi

Concerned Nation-Builders Initiative, an NGO on Sunday in Epe, Lagos State stressed the need for human capital development for nation building.

The Director General, Mr Idris Tele-Olukoya, told TeslimBlog that Nigeria would develop faster if attention was shifted a bit away from politics.

More attention, he said, should be given to capacity building in education, ICT, skills acquisition and wealth creation among others.

“The driving force for a nation’s development and growth has shifted from natural endowments to knowledge economy.

“Countries without abundant resources have been excelling because of the emphasis on human capital that propels knowledge economy,’’ he argued.

Tele-Olukoya noted that Nigeria had not been serious with her human capacity building because she had not been treating education as a priority sector.

“UNESCO approved that 26 per cent of annual budgets of countries be allocated to the education sector, but Nigeria allocates less than 8 per cent to the sector.

“Nigeria has been spending much on governance while critical infrastructure and education in particular have been treated with levity in national budgets.

“It is estimated that the country’s oil reserves would be exhausted by 2052.

“Nigeria, therefore needs to key into the New Economy by...

Nearly four years after failing, by a small margin, in his bid to govern Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has overcome the biggest obstacle to his dream.

It was enough for the Returning Officer of the election, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, to declare him winner and governor-elect.

“I declare that Adeleke Ademola Jackson Nurudeen of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected,” Professor Ogundipe declared, sparking jubilation among Adeleke’s supporters.

Ebun, the mother of one of two undergraduates of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, who abandoned their studies after alleged forced initiation by suspected members of the Eiye Confraternity, has said her son is ill.

The woman, while demanding a probe of the incident, said the undergraduate was also traumatised by what he suffered in the hands of the suspects last Saturday.

“I and the family members of my son’s colleague will be visiting the school together. We want justice.

“My child said he can no longer go to school; will the school give him a certificate? If he cannot get a certificate, I am appealing to Nigerians to support me financially so my son can secure admission to another school to further his education.

“I am a single mother and it was not easy for me to pay for his school fees and allowance. He has abandoned the one I struggled to pay for because of what the cultists did to him.”
